Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade taco seasoning is a super easy DIY recipe that tastes so much better than what you buy in the store. It's the first seasoning mix I ever made, and after that, I was hooked! It's gluten-free, dairy-free, and preservative free. This will make your tacos sing!

Homemade taco seasoning is the very first seasoning I made from scratch. It was so quick and easy, and so delicious that I never went back to store bought. Ok, actually I did go back to store-bought this one time,  and I was so disappointed in the (lack of) flavor that I promptly went right back to this. Not only does it taste better, it’s gluten- and dairy-free. Gluten free taco seasoning? How unextraordinary. Well, not really. What you may not realize is that many taco seasonings have gluten and/or dairy in them. Crazy, right? Read your labels. You would be so surprised by what is in your food. And frightened. It’s yucky.

I make it in huge batches and always have it on hand, so I get the convenience of on-hand, store-bought seasoning without the gluten, dairy and chemicals. I buy my seasonings in bulk because I use so much of it making taco seasoning, chili seasoning, dry ranch dressing mix, and more. It’s much less expensive this way, and I’ve been very happy with the quality. I included links to the ones I buy below.

Next week I’m sharing one of our favorite recipes to use this in. I had planned to share it this week, but I wanted to give you this recipe first. Homemade taco seasoning is what I use when I make tacos for 3-minute taco egg scramble as well.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Small Batch

2 tbsp chili powder

1.5 tbsp cumin

1.5 tbsp paprika

1 tbsp onion powder

1 tbsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp cayenne

Industrial Size Batch

1 cup chili powder

1.3 cups cumin

1.3 cups paprika

1 cup onion powder

1 cup garlic powder

3 tbsp salt

4 tsp cayenne

Add all ingredients to a reusable container and shake, shake, shake to mix. Use 2 tablespoons per pound of meat for a very taco-y flavor. That’s it!
