You Can Wear Stunning and Comfortable Pants
Welcome back to our series about dressing comfortable and stylish. Last week we talked about what tops to wear when we want to get the best of both worlds we’ve been living in. What does it look like when that “I could sleep in this” comfort and the “I feel better when I look nice” clothes get married and have a baby?
We also talked about the mullet of outfits. It’s business on top and nap time on bottom. When you get just ready enough to be professional on that Zoom call it’s because you don’t want to sacrifice the comfort, especially on bottom, and today we are going to talk about comfortable pants. Actual pants.
My husband and I work together, and he wants to institute pantless Mondays here at Stunning Style headquarters, but so far the rest of the in-house team (that’s me) vote no.

One of the greatest inventions of the 20th century is Lycra. Do you remember the days of hopping up and down to get your jeans on, then laying the bed to get them zipped, and doing some squats to loosen them up? And if step one or step two failed, you got them damp with a spray bottle and started over? Then if you succeeded your reward was you got to suffer all day whenever you sat down.
Those days of painful denim are over! Most jeans now have at least 2% Lycra in them and it’s quite possibly the greatest gift to clothing of all time. When I left my corporate career to be a stay-at-home mom, I didn’t even own a pair of jeans. Now I wear jeans the majority of the time because of my lifestyle with six kids and a dog.
My favorite jeans are stretchy, but they don’t stretch out, they’re flattering, comfortable, sturdy, come in basically any color I could ever wish for, perfect for my body shape, and machine washable. I can get down in the floor and sit in these without them cutting off the blood at my knee caps.
Waistbands were the primary pressure point, but now the newest jeans even have ultra-stretchy waistbands, which is GLORIOUS. There are jeans that are very literally as comfortable as yoga pants now, and every season I order tons of jeans to try on for the seasonal Classic Wardrobe Guides so you don’t have to.

Dressy clothes are my real true love, but I also have to be able to live my real life, so once again, Lycra to the rescue. These dressy pants I love to wear are also so stretchy I can do ANYTHING in them. The cut and style is dressy, and the material looks dressy, but they are so comfortable I call them magic pants. In my closet I have straight-leg, bootcut, cropped bootcut, and wide-leg styles, and I love that I can get that dressy look and feel without the dressy limitation of movement. Not only that, but they are also machine washable.
My daughters love to request different poses when I take my outfit photos, and in this one I was jumping for joy in my magic pants. So you can wear comfortable pants and look really nice in them.
I don’t have to save my pants for dressy-looking outfits, either. I can dress them up or down, so they work in every part of my wardrobe.
A favorite for me, especially in the summer, is skirts. These can be stretchy but don’t have to be, depending on the cut. I personally don’t wear anything that’s shorter than knee-length, and for normal days I prefer a slight a-line, nothing that restricts my movement. There are places I wouldn’t wear a skirt, like to play at the park, at an amusement park, or anywhere I would be climbing around. If I could find a skort long enough I would wear that.
