Tip #5 - Go DArk(er)

Darkening up your color palette reflects the changes we see around us as the days shorten and the sun sits a little lower in the sky. The shadows get longer and the colors around us deepen. We can reflect that in our outfits in three ways!

Darker Neutrals

As we say goodbye to summer, one way to go darker is to move from wearing more white and other light neutrals to the darker neutrals you love. Whatever your favorite neutrals are, choose the darker versions of them. For me that means stepping into more black, navy, and espresso brown.

These two tees are nearly identical in color and style, but there is a big difference when I pair it with navy versus white. The white on bottoms screams summer, which the navy says I’m stepping into autumn

Darker Patterns

Yesterday we talked about fall patterns, but that doesn’t mean you have to abandon your favorites. Choosing the darker versions of them will bring them into fall. Think florals, polka dots or paisley on a dark background or darker stripes – like black or navy with white instead of white with black/navy, like Olivia Palermo does below.

Darker Colors

Even though there is that typical fall color palette we all pine for every year (see what I did there?), you can wear any color in the fall and make it feel seasonal by choosing the darker version of it. Instead of grass green I go for a deeper green, my favorite stop sign red from summer transitions to a deeper cranberry red, and I go for deeper purples.

I have two of this exact sweater. One is a lighter grass green I wear in the spring, and this one is a deeper green I prefer in the fall.

Dark Green

Combining these three options and pairing your darker neutrals with the darker patterns and colors really pulls in that fall vibe even more. I hope this gave you some ideas on how you can incorporate darker colors into these transition months if the weather is not quite ready for fall, and you are!

I’ll be sharing a new tip each day this week, so join me at 1 pm ET each day for more ideas to transition your outfits to fall because the next tip could be the perfect one for you.
